Birkenstock and Papillio: What’s The Difference?

While these shoes share a lot of similarities, the main bulk of the difference comes down to audience and fashion.

Birkenstock

Birkenstock primarily focuses on traditional sandals that emphasise orthopaedic support and comfort. Not really focusing so much on style or trends.

They’re primarily made in Germany. They are recognised everywhere for their cork footbeds that provide brilliant arch support which moulds to the wearer over time, only increasing in comfort as you wear them.

The brand is well-known for its iconic styles like the Arizona and Boston.

Papillio

Papillio is licensed by Birkenstock - meaning they can use the same design and fall under the Birkenstock name and brand. Nothing gets made with Papillio on it without HQ of Birk knowing about it. Though technically speaking, they’re different shoes.

They’re made in Spain and are more of a seasonal fashion shoe. Usually they’ll have bolder colours, patterns, sometimes with a trendy sole or a platform. They often have a totally different vibe to the classic Birkenstocks and are designed for the fashionista looking for a comfortable but vibrant sandal.

If you buy them, you’ll notice some detailing differences too. The boxes say Papillio by Birkenstock, a small yet subtle change that’s there to let you know you’ve bought a seasonal fashion sandal.

You may also notice the Papillio name embossed into the details of the sandal in the same placement and design as a Birk. A homage to its origins.

While there are differences, you’ll find that they have the same footbed material style and of course that same quality and construction.

Which one is best? Well thats up to you…
