Penelope Chilvers is quite unique in producing Goodyear™ welted footwear in the women’s market. This construction was traditionally only used in the highest quality men’s footwear. This is an understated piece of traditional craftsmanship that, in terms of technicality and quality, is far superior to all other footwear constructions. To make a Goodyear™ welted boot, our artisans sew a welt around the upper and the lining of the boot and this is then stitched to the midsole and sole. A layer of cork is added to the midsole that, in time, will mould to the foot for a glove like fit which is far more comfortable. This technique is much more labour intensive, but the result is a much more durable, quality pair of boots that will stand the test of time. With a Goodyear™ welt constructed boot, a shoemaker can unstitch the sole and resole it for you when it wears down which is a much more sustainable way of looking after your footwear. Sometimes our customers find the feeling of a Goodyear™ welt shoe to be quite firm under foot at the beginning. This is because we are more accustomed to padded sports foam insoles. Goodyear™ welted boots are a slow fashion, quality choice of footwear that should last for many years to come.
